2 Go To Portland ~ On The Amtrak Empire Builder

Hello Folks!

We have had the best weekend away.  When we left Chicago, things with The Virus were ok ish and when we got back five days later, things were a tad more serious.

Anyway, let me show you pictures from our trip.
We boarded the Amtrak at Chicago Grand Union Station.

The train is a double decker, incredibly noisy and not particularly fast.  This journey would take us three days.

We settled in our cabin, which had a toilet and shower, a fold down double bed, a single bunk and a chair.

We were given the low down on how things worked on the train by our guard Chris.  He was really helpful and couldn't do enough for us.

Our cabin was on the upper deck of the last carriage and for most of the trip we had the whole carriage to ourselves.
Before long, we on our way along the Chicago River,
and holding up the traffic in the suburbs.
A few hours later and we were already in industrial Milwaukee.
We had been advised by our guard to 'spread your weight' while walking around the train or as Mr Clicky put it 'walk like a duck.'  Dinner time was soon upon us and we walked the five carriages along 'duck walking' wasn't all that successful for me!  Many of my steps were accompanied by a 'oop, or sorry! while clattering into a seat.'  We were seated with two of our fellow passengers and chatted through our meal.

So from Illinois, we went into Wisconsin and then slept through Minnesota.  It wasn't the best night's sleep I have had, although the rocking of the train was quite nice!

When we awoke we were in North Dakota.  I have mentioned that the train is not the fastest.  The route is also used by frequent goods trains and is, in places single track, so we had to wait in sidings.

We clattered and clanked along, through North Dakota's oil fields.

Stopping to let people off, and on.

And then into Montana, Big Sky Country.  More meals in the Dining Car; time slipped slowly by with a clank and a clatter.  Sometimes the train stopped, sometimes it just went very slowly.

We talked about nothing and everything, played cards, snoozed and of course, I knitted, a glove this time.
Train Time certainly slowed us down.  It took all day to go through Montana, sometimes there was a little relief of mountains in the distance.

Suddenly it got a bit snowy.
Snow crept in between the carriages.
As we ate another dinner we arrived in Glacier Park.

Sadly we didn't see any glaciers as by now it was dark.  Even more sadly, experts are predicting the Glaciers will have gone by 2030.

We settled in for our night's sleep and travel through Idaho into Washington.  When I woke up next morning Mr Clicky was already awake.  He was tracking our progress on the Amtrak App and said we were delayed by three hours.  Then came an announcement from our singing snack car lady that we had hit a tree in the night.  The engine had been damaged so we had been shunted back up the track and the engines had been swapped.

We had a cold breakfast this time as the train had split in Spokane, the front half went to Seattle along with the dining car.  We soon came into The Columbia River Gorge in Washington.  It was spectacular.

Can you spot the goods train on the Oregon side of The Gorge?

We spotted a sea eagle but I couldn't get a picture!

We carried on slowly down The Gorge for a few more hours and then we packed our things together.  The train trundled into a stop in Portland Union Station, Oregon.  Time for one last picture of our home for the last three days.

Union Station.

We walked the short distance to our hotel in a snowstorm and set out to explore the city.

Next instalment, 2 have fun in Portland.

See you soon..........Clicky Needles.

A New Project

Hello Folks.

Still no news on the lost iPad I'm afraid, we are still trying to contact the right people.

I finished The Sewing Machine book, and found it to be enjoyable.  It is set across the life of the sewing machine from 1910 to the present day.  One of the characters makes and alters clothing using the machine in order to supplement her income.  Every project she has worked on she records in notebooks, using a scrap of material or lace or line of stitching, writing in, what it was, who it was for and what she got paid for it.  This got me thinking.  I am going to record the projects that I have made with my vintage machines in a similar way but I will also be recording which machine I made it on.  Watch this space!

I forgot to show you last time the wrap cardigan that I was making for my granddaughter, Baby Needles.  You might remember that I was making this Baby Needles to wear at her mum and dad's (Miss Clicky and Hubby) wedding day.  I was finishing it off as we getting the marquee ready for the big day and I lost it!   We couldn't find it anywhere.  As it was, it was a gloriously hot day and it wasn't needed.  Six months later and I happened to look in the boot of Master Clicky's car, and there it was.

I finished it off and, as it definitely won't fit Baby Needles any more I gave it to my hairdresser who is having a baby girl in two months time.

Mr Clicky has asked me to knit him a Fair Isle Jumper.  I don't think he had ever asked me to knit him anything so of course I said yes.  We had a long and drawn out process of finding a pattern and I have to thank my lovely knitting pal Romain who rifled through her patterns and sent my away with ideas and her own hand made yarn colour sticks of Jamieson and Smith shetland yarn for Mr Clicky to choose.

It took a while but he has settled on this pattern.

He decided on these colours.  The lovely rich ginger is the main colour with the contrast of plum and peachy mix.

I'm working bottom up; the ribbing was on 2mm needles and the stocking stitch is 3mm and the yarn is 4ply so slow going!

This weekend Mr Clicky and me are on a Rail Trip.  We are taking The Amtrak Empire Builder Train from Chicago to Portland, Oregon a journey of 1750 miles.  We leave at lunch time on Thursday and arrive Saturday morning, staying in a cabin on the train for 2 nights, have 2 nights in Portland and then fly back again.  Whilst we are in Portland we are catching up with some bloggy friends.  ;-). I am tremendously excited about this trip, one I have been wanting to do for quite some time.

Lastly a beautiful $1 hyacinth we bought in Walmart which is sending its delicate scent through our apartment.  It is becoming very heavy and is propped against the wall.

That's me for now, I'm off to pack for our trip.

Bye for now..........Clicky Needles

Stateside

Hello from Chicagoland.

Mr Clicky and I arrived safely and we had ~ for once ~ a very pleasant flight.  The flight was not full and we had a row of 4 seats to ourselves, so we spread out and filled it completely.  I even reclined my seat as there was no one behind me, which as a shy Brit is something I never usually do!  Unfortunately, due to my relaxed state I think, I left my iPad in the seat pocket.  *Sigh* This should not be a problem, there is a telephone number for lost property in O'Hare airport, the trouble is no one answers.  We have had a frustrating week phoning, sent two complaints to B.A. but we're not really getting any help.  I'm not sure I will be seeing it again.

Before I left I managed to get the two Roman Blinds finished for Miss Clicky and her hubby's house.

I can see Baby Needles learning her colours from them as she gets older.

I didn't get the curtains finished but that will be my first job when I get back.

I have had a relaxing first week here with crafting obviously.  I made myself a pair of wrist warmers with the remaining yarn from the ones I gave to my niece for Christmas.

The colour of this pair have turned out quite different to the originals.
I have also been sewing a plant embroidery kit I got when I was here last.  The plant on the left is made from French Knots, not my favourite stitch, pun intended.

I have given up on that plant and tried the one next door.  The stitch on this is called, unsurprisingly, leaf stitch and is one I haven't tried before.

I've been doing a little reading too.  I don't read often enough and I am enjoying The Sewing Machine very much.

I
I'm actually waiting for some yarn to arrive from The U.K.  Mr Clicky has asked me to knit a jumper, which is a rarity, I need it to come soon or I won't be able get it finished before I go home.

That's me for now, we have sunshine forecast for the weekend, hope it's good for you too.
